Recently, a community website of IOP, Nanotech web, published a news report, Carbon nanotubes make molybdenum disulfide more active (link: http://nanotechweb.org/cws/article/lab/59223), on the research of Yu Cai, who was an undergraduate student of DPSE when she published the paper, Easy incorporation of single-walled carbon nanotubes into two-dimensional MoS2 for high-performance hydrogen evolution, Nanotechnology 25, 465401 (2014) [doi:10.1088/0957-4484/25/46/465401], on Nanotechnology as the first author. The work develops a facile method of simply dispersing MoS2 nanosheets into a water–isopropanol solution of high-conducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) for preparation of MoS2/SWCNT composites, used in catalytic hydrogen production (hydrogen energy is a sustainable secondary energy). The SWCNTs in the hybrid system serve as effective electron transport channels among 2D MoS2 nanosheets and facilitate charge transfer at the catalyst–electrolyte interface. A high-performance hybrid catalyst with a low Tafel slope of 40.82 mV/decade was obtained, which is among the best MoS2 based catalysts reported. The graduation project of Yu Cai was guided by Mingsheng Xu, and this work provides new opportunities for the research of hydrogen production.
The author of the paper, Yu Cai and Lu Dai are undergraduate students of DPSE. Yu Cai is now studying for a doctor's degree in University of Colorado – Boulder in the Department of Chemistry and Biology Engineering.
