Time£º2024-05-20 02:02

On September 7th, orientation ceremony for those post-graduate students enrolled in 2013 was held in room 228, polymer building. Prof. Zhiquan Shen(Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences), Prof. Zhikang Xu(Dean of DPSE), Mr. Rengong Lou(Chair of DPSE), Prof. Changyou Gao and Prof. Qi Wang(Vice Deans of DPSE), Prof. Zhiqiang Fan(Director of the Institute of Polymer Science), Prof. Yihu Song(Vice director of the Institute of Polymer Composites), Prof. Zhisheng Fu, Prof. Lie Shen and Prof. Youxiang Wang were present at this ceremony.

The ceremony was announced to begin at 9:00am, hosted by Prof. Qi Wang. In the opening speech, Prof. Zhiquan Shen congratulated the newly enrolled students on their opportunity to study in Zhejiang Universityand hoped that they would keep a clear mind on how to promote themselves and take advantage of their excellent, well-rounded talents. Prof. Zhikang Xu, the dean of DPSE, also expressed his wishes to the students. He elaborated on the current situation of DPSE by numbers of one to seven, which meant, respectively, one department building, two academicians of CAS, three research institutes, four winners of National Natural Science Funds for Excellent Young Scholars, five research fields, six winners of National Natural Science Funds for Distinguished Young Scholars and seven members of New Century Excellent Talents of Ministry of Education.

Other professors made their own speech as well. Prof. Changyou Gao, associate dean of DPSE and director of the Institute of Biomedical Macromolecules, contended that only by sustained efforts could we achieve our goals. He also suggested that students should enhance their power of independent thinking while learning new skills, pay more attention to safety while carrying out experiments and enjoy their lives while conducting research projects. Prof. Qi Wang hoped that they would be excellent enough in the future so that Zhejiang University would be proud of its alumni like them, while Prof. Zhiqiang Fan emphasized the importance and great value of time they had to cherish and the various resources they could make use of during their graduate studies. Vice director of the Institute of Polymer Composites, Prof. Yihu Song, also provided his own advices for students. He stated that practice is the sole criterion for testing truth. Besides, they should do more readings with their critical minds and make more practice at the same time.

The ceremony stepped into the second stage after a short break, hosted by the secretary Jiao Meng. The chair Rengong Lou shared his perspectives with students. He pointed out that they should have a deep understanding of the connotation that the word “polymerization” implied and realize that DPSE was actually just like their home. Each of them was restarting their trip and virtually ahead of nobody, that means, they were in the same starting line and had to manage to promote themselves by making continuous progress. They should also learn to ask for help, supports and encouragements from their families and friends in times of trouble and tension, when they were confronting difficulties. Moreover, they should have a broad vision and be ambitious but never neglect or ignore those details and trivia, achieving their goals step by step. Afterwards the graduate study advisor Tong Shen gave a detailed explanation of the questions regarding registration, health examination, courses and so on. The chairman of the graduate student union (GSU), Tao Xu, also made a brief presentation on the organizations of GSU and their responsibilities as well as the work that had been done over the past year. Finally, the orientation ceremony for newly enrolled post-graduate students reached its end along with the applause of all participants.
