Brief description of duties of this position (attach position description):


·         Work directly with Customers, Sales & Marketing to develop new products for existing markets identified by the business units.

·         Assist Business Units (Sales & Marketing) with technical service in the selection of existing grades capable of meeting stated technical & processing requirements.

·         Work with manufacturing, purchasing and technology on Margin Improvement Initiatives (MIP).   Lead cross-functional teams for new products and/or advanced processes.

·         Benchmark competitor grades and technology.

·         Provide Technical guidance to management, Business Unit (sales & marketing), customers and manufacturing on new and modified product development efforts.

 

Describe the current conditions and the reasons why you are requesting that funds be allocated to fill this position:

Hongwei Liu, Current EIF scientist responsible for PM88 cellulose media, will return to US in June 2012.  A replacement for Hongwei’s position in Suzhou is needed 18 months prior to Hongwei’s departure to allow enough overlap and training.

 

The EIF Scientist role is critical to support the development of local products for the China and greater Asia Pacific Market.  Key products and key customers include:

 

·         Heavy Duty Air grades for DCI, SFG, Pingyuan, etc.

·         Fuel and Lube grades for SFG, Santian, Pingyuan, Bengbu, Parker, etc.

·         Gas turbine grades for Watsun, Huasheng, Jiangyin Renhe, Aier, etc.

·         Alkaline Battery separator products

·         Wallcover products for EuroArt, Artwall, etc.

 

 

Describe the Lean SixSigma activities have occurred in this area to eliminate non-value added activities:

Goals to be achieved – describe the major business goals to be achieved by funding of this position:

 

First 6 months:

 

·         Various trainings including: 1) Lab handsheet making and paper saturation; 2) hands on paper physical performance testing; 3) Resin chemistry and paper-making process; 4) Lean 6-sigma and utilization of statistic tools

·         Familiarize with formula search and set up new project and furnish and resin formula in Oracle

 

First 12 months:

 

·         Prepare trial paperwork and conduct pretrial meeting, and lead the trial

·         Participate in conferences and trade shows

·         Establish customer relationship

·         Provide mill and customer support in conducting quality troubleshooting

 

First 18 months:

 

·         Conduct above mentioned activities plus -

·         Development of the new products (HDA, fuel, lube, GT, etc.)

·         New raw material qualification in supporting MIP projects

·         Coordinate external collaboration projects

 

Describe the financial impact that this position will contribute to H&V in terms of added revenues, profits, costs reduced, quality improved, etc.  Show the payback in years, using the annual salary and a 30% fringe benefit rate.

This position is currently in the approved 2011 budget.

 

The financial impact of this position for 2011 is estimated to be:

 

·         Assist Hongwei for PM88 projects, and fulfill the goal of increasing the capacity of Suzhou PM88 with an estimate profit of $5M

·         Work with local potential customers to gain $4M additional sales, which generates an estimate profit of $0.5M

·         Develop wallcover products for local market to gain 600 tons of annual volume, which generates an estimate profit of $0.5M
